Waxed Cotton Also Known As Oilskin Cotton
A waxed cotton jacket, coat or similar products are made from densely woven cotton with a water-resistant wax treatment and the paraffin-based wax dressing waterproofs the cotton by soaking into the dense material and setting in between the fibres. As the wax dressing is wax dissolved paraffin to start with, this is also known as Oilskin cotton.
The result is a fabric that is extremely weatherproof and warm and is a traditional icon of the British and Irish countryside. Worn for outdoor rural pursuits such as hunting, shooting and fishing. Today the wax jacket is commonly worn in both urban and rural settings.
The advantage of this material is that it can be easily reproofed. Put a thorn through the wax layer and that can be simply made waterproof again by a touch of wax.
